Wallet Sewing Pattern – A How to Tutorial (Free PDF)

This simple wallet sewing pattern consists of 3 card slots as well as a front flap to keep your cards protected. Includes tutorial for a strap to turn it into a wristlet wallet!

How to Make a Fabric Wallet Step-By-Step

This mini fabric wallet is an easy sewing project and consists of only a few steps. First, you will need to sew each of the card pocket (slot) pieces as well as the side tab with D-ring.

Second, you will stack each of the card pockets on top of each other and sew it to the inner fabric.

Third, sew the outer fabric to the inner fabric, right sides together, leaving an opening at the bottom. Then, turn the wallet to the right side through the opening.

Finally, press the seam allowance of the opening into the wallet and top stitch all around. Finished!

The wallet sewing pattern, once finished, measures approximately 4.25”x 3.25” (10.8 cm x 8.23 cm ) when closed. The wristlet measures approximately 7” (17.8 cm) long and is 0.75”(1.9 cm) wide.

What Do I need to Sew a Fabric Wallet?

NOTE: Measurements below are listed as: width of fabric x height of fabric (along selvedge)

Materials

  • OUTER FABRIC -100% Cotton. Minimum = one piece of fabric measuring 5″ x 6″ (12.7 cm x 15.24 cm).
  • INNER FABRIC – 100% Cotton. Minimum = one piece of fabric measuring 5″ x 6″ (12.7 cm x 15.24 cm).
  • CARD POCKET FABRIC – 100% Cotton. Minimum = one piece of fabric measuring 15″ x 10″ (38.1 cm x 25.4 cm).
  • FUSIBLE INTERFACING – medium weight
  • MATCHING THREAD
  • 1/2” D RING
  • LOBSTER CLASP (3/4”or 1” both work)
  • PLASTIC SNAPS

Wallet Sewing Pattern Tutorial

Wallet Sewing Pattern Pieces

First, cut out the following pieces on fabric:

  • OUTER PIECE (x1)
  • INNER PIECE (x1)
  • POCKET PIECE C (x2)
  • POCKET PIECE B (x2)
  • POCKET PIECE A (x2)
  • SIDE TAB PIECE – cut one piece measuring 2″ x 2″ (5.08cm x 5.08cm)

Second, cut out the following pieces on fusible interfacing:

  • OUTER PIECE INTERFACING (x1)
  • POCKET PIECE C INTERFACING (x1)
  • POCKET PIECE B INTERFACING (x1)
  • POCKET PIECE A INTERFACING (x1)

Next, make sure to iron fusible interfacing onto OUTER PIECE and one of each POCKET PIECE using steam iron.

How to Sew Side Tab

  1. Fold SIDE TAB PIECE in half and press with iron.
  2. Open (see the crease line at the center).
  3. Fold bottom edge up to meet center crease line and press down.
  4. Fold top edge to meet crease line. Press.
  5. Fold side tab piece in half again and press.
  6. Sew side tab piece down by making two stitches along sides, 1/8”(3mm) from edge.

Next, thread SIDE TAB PIECE through D ring and fold in half.

Then, stitch in place, 1/2”(1.27cm) from ends. Your SIDE TAB PIECE is now done!

Sewing Wallet Card Pockets

First, place POCKET PIECES A together, right sides facing each other. Stitch along top edge at 1/4”(6mm) seam allowance (black dotted line).

Next, turn POCKET PIECE A to right side and press along top edge. Top stitch along top, 1/8” (3mm) from edge (black dotted line).

Now, repeat same process to make POCKET PIECE B and C.

Then, place POCKET PIECE B on top of POCKET PIECE A, matching along sides and bottom.

Next, place POCKET PIECE C on top of POCKET PIECE B, matching along sides and bottom.

Now place SIDE TAB PIECE at the upper right corner, D ring facing in (as pictured). Line up the stitch line (red arrow) with pocket side. Hold in place with clips and baste at the sides (yellow lines).

Next, place basted pocket pieces on top of right side of INNER PIECE, matching at the sides and bottom, as pictured.

Finally, baste POCKET PIECES to INNER PIECE at sides and bottom (yellow line)

How to Sew Wallet Pattern Together

First Place OUTER PIECE over, right sides together and sew at 1/4”(6mm) seam allowance, leaving a ~3” opening at the bottom (red line). Make sure to back stitch at both ends.

Next, clip bottom corners at a diagonal and cut slits along the curve.

NOTE: In the right photo I cut notches to make it easier for you see. However, you can just cut slits, doesn’t have to be notches.

Then, turn wallet to right side through opening at bottom.

Now give your wallet a good press, making sure to tuck in seam allowance at the opening.

Top stitch around entire wallet, 1/8” (3mm) from edge (yellow line).

TIP: Go slowly at the thick parts (where the pockets are). You may need to walk your machine to get a nice stitch (that’s what i did). Be patient and don’t rush.

Alternatively, if you find the thick parts of the top stitching too difficult, you can close the bottom hole by hand using invisible ladder stitch. Afterwards, just top stitch the flap of the wallet only.

How To Apply Plastic Snaps

First, to apply plastic snaps, you will need 2 snap covers, a stud, and a socket.

Then, on wallet flap, mark placement of snap cover. I am using awl that comes with my snap it, however, you can use fabric chalk or a pen. My snap position is approximately ½”(1.27cm) from bottom edge, at the center of flap.

NOTE: You may want to place your snaps a little higher or lower than mine. Just make sure the snap cover is centered.

Next, insert snap cover so prong (pointy end) comes out the inside of flap.

Now place snap stud over the exposed prong.

Then press it together with pliers. Note that the rubber head of pliers goes over the stud, and the black part of the pliers goes over the snap cover. Give it a good squeeze.

See how the pointy end of the prong has now been squished flat (black arrow). This lets you know that the snaps have been successfully applied.

Next, pull wallet flap down and mark where bottom snap should go on the card pocket.

Then, poke other snap cover from the inside of the pouch through to expose the prong. In this example, mine is about ⅜”(0.95mm) from top edge of card pocket.

Now place the socket over the exposed prong.

Again, use pliers to give it a good hard squeeze.

How to Sew Wristlet

First, cut out the following pieces:

  • FABRIC (X1): Measures 3”x 15” (7.62cm x 38.1cm). Make sure to cut long length of fabric along selvedge.
  • FUSIBLE INTERFACING (X1)1.5”x 14.5” (3.81cm x 36.83 cm)

Pressing Fabric

Second, fold fabric in half widthwise and give it a good press. This is to create a center crease line.

Third, open your fabric piece (wrong side facing up) and fold bottom edge to meet center crease line. Give this a good press. This creates quarter crease line.

Fourth, open up your fabric again. Then, place interfacing (fusible side down), 1/4” (6mm) from both edges. Align bottom of interfacing with quarter crease line.

Next, fuse interfacing to wrong side of fabric. See how on both sides the fusible is ¼” (6mm) shorter than the fabric.

Then, fold bottom edge up to meet the midline and press.

Next, fold top edge down to midline and press.

Finally, fold entire piece in half and press down.

Sewing Wristlet Together

Now thread fabric through lobster clasp loop and pull lobster clasp to approximately middle of fabric strip.

Next, open both ends of fabric strip, as pictured.

Then, match opened ends of fabric strip right sides together. Pin in place and sew at 1/4”(6mm) seam allowance (blue line).

  1. Press open bottom seams.
  2. Fold right edge to center, according to previous fold line. Give it a press if necessary.
  3. Fold left edge to center, according to previous fold line. Press if necessary.
  4. Fold fabric strip in half and give it a press if necessary.

Next, remove sewing machine free arm.

Then sew wristlet in place, 1/8”(3mm) from both edge (green line).

Next, position lobster clasp loop so that it is at the top middle of loop. The bottom middle of loop is the seam line.

Finally, sew a line at the top, right below the lobster clasp to keep it in place. Backstitch and forward stitch a coupe times across to reinforce.

Your mini wallet wristlet is now done! You did it! WAHOO!!!

First, before we begin, make sure to iron fusible interfacing onto OUTER PIECE and one of each POCKET PIECE.

HOW TO SEW SIDE TAB

  1. Fold SIDE TAB PIECE in half and press with iron to create a center crease line.
  2. Fold bottom edge up to meet center crease line and press down.
  3. Fold top edge to meet crease line. Press.
  4. Fold side tab piece in half again and press.
  5. Sew side tab piece down by making two stitches along sides, 1/8”(3mm) from edge.
  6. Thread SIDE TAB PIECE through 1/2" D ring and fold in half.
  7. Stitch in place, 1/2” (1.27cm) from ends. You SIDE TAB PIECE is now done.

HOW TO SEW CARD POCKETS

  1. Place POCKET PIECES A together, right sides facing each other. Stitch along top edge at 1/4” (6mm) seam allowance.
  2. Turn POCKET PIECE A to right side and press along top edge. Top stitch along top, 1/8” (3mm) from edge.
  3. Repeat same process to make POCKET PIECE B and C.
  4. Place POCKET PIECE B on top of POCKET PIECE A, matching along sides and bottom.
  5. Place POCKET PIECE C on top of POCKET PIECE B, matching along sides and bottom.
  6. Place SIDE TAB PIECE at the upper right corner of POCKET PIECE A, D ring facing in. Line up the stitch line with side of pocket. Hold in place with clips and baste the sides.
  7. Place basted pocket pieces on top of INNER PIECE (right side up), matching at sides and bottom.
  8. Baste POCKET PIECES to INNER PIECE at sides and bottom.

HOW TO SEW WALLET PATTERN TOGETHER

  1. Place OUTER PIECE over, right sides together and sew at 1/4”(6mm) seam allowance, leaving a 3” opening at the bottom. Make sure to back stitch at both ends.
  2. Clip bottom corners at a diagonal and cut slits along the curve.
  3. Turn wallet to right side through opening at bottom.
  4. Give your wallet a good press, making sure to tuck in seam allowance at the bottom opening.
  5. Top stitch around entire wallet, 1/8”(3mm) from edge (see note 1).

HOW TO APPLY PLASTIC SNAPS

  1. Get ready materials for plastic snaps: You will need 2 snap covers, 1 stud, 1 socket, and snap pliers.
  2. On wallet flap, mark placement of snap cover. I am using awl that comes with my snap it, however, you can use fabric chalk or a pen. My snap position is approximately ½” (1.27cm) from bottom edge, at the center of flap (see note 2).
  3. Insert snap cover so prong (pointy end) comes out the inside of flap.
  4. Place snap stud over the exposed prong.
  5. Press together with snap pliers. Note that the rubber head of pliers goes over the stud, and the black part of the pliers goes over the snap cover. Give it a good squeeze (see note 3).
  6. Pull wallet flap down and mark where bottom snap should go on the card pocket.
  7. Poke other snap cover from the inside of the pouch through to expose the prong. In this example, mine is about ⅜” (0.95mm) from top edge of card pocket.
  8. Place the socket over the exposed prong and use plies to give it a good hard squeeze (see note 3).
  9. Your mini wallet is now complete!

HOW TO SEW WALLET STRAP (optional)

  1. Cut the following pieces:
    FABRIC (X1): Measures 3”x 15”(7.62cm x 38.1cm). Make sure to cut long length of fabric along selvedge.
    FUSIBLE INTERFACING (X1) - 1.5”x 14.5” (3.81cm x 36.83 cm)
  2. Fold fabric in half widthwise and give it a good press. This is to create a center crease line.
  3. Open your fabric piece (wrong side facing up) and fold bottom edge to meet center crease line. Give this a good press. This creates quarter crease line.
  4. Open up your fabric again. Then, place interfacing (fusible side down), 1/4” (6mm) from both edges. Align bottom of interfacing with quarter crease line.
  5. Fuse interfacing to wrong side of fabric.
  6. Fold bottom edge up to meet midline and press.
  7. Fold top edge down to midline and press.
  8. Fold entire piece in half and press down.
  9. Thread fabric through lobster clasp loop and pull lobster clasp to approximately middle of fabric strip.
  10. Open both ends of fabric strip and match opened ends of fabric strip right sides together. Pin in place and sew at 1/4” (6mm) seam allowance. Make sure to backstitch at both ends.
  11. Press open seams.
  12. Fold right edge to center, according to previous fold line. Give it a press if necessary.
  13. Fold left edge to center, according to previous fold line. Press if necessary.
  14. Fold fabric strip in half and give it a press if necessary.
  15. Remove sewing machine free arm and sew wristlet in place, 1/8” (3mm) from both edge.
  16. Next, position lobster clasp loop so that it is at the top middle of loop. The bottom middle of loop is the seam line.
  17. Sew a line at the top, right below the lobster clasp to keep it in place. Backstitch and forward stitch a coupe times across to reinforce.
  18. Wristlet is finished!

Notes

Note 1: Alternatively, if you find the thick parts of the top stitching too difficult, you can close the bottom hole by hand using invisible ladder stitch. Afterwards, just top stitch the flap of the wallet only.

Note 2: You may want to place your snaps a little higher or lower than mine. Just make sure the snap cover is centered.

Note 3: The tip of the snap prong should be completely flattened after applying snap pliers. This tells you that the snap has been correctly applied.
